decided to try something new. utilizing some of the things i learned in my recent painting class with Ron Gordon, i tried approaching this piece in a different, less illustrative way than what i’ve been working on lately. coming along pretty quickly, but i imagine this may take a while if i want to get it the way i really want it. [i'm thinking i should try a reproduction of John Singer Sergeant first, just to get the feel for use of light and atmosphere].

i have these beautiful little wood and clayboard boxes that measure 6 x 6 inches. i’ve had them for years but never knew what to do with them. i figured i’d save them for a certain series of works. all the series i’ve done up until now required a different base [wood, canvas, paper, etc.]. the clayboard is so so fine, it’s really best suited to just oil. so i started this piece with a pencil sketch and went over the lines in liquin just to set them [otherwise working straight away with oil will blow out my original sketch]. this way, i can still see the undersketch and work with it as i layer. this piece might take a while, but i like the start …

the iris of the eyes are done in silver with a touch of indigo.

unlike the others i’ve created recently, this one is done on a textured canvas board. i really love how it absorbs the paint, and it’s very smooth to work on. the brand is called “the artist panel” this is oil on 5 x 5 inch board panel.

i’ve kept a good record of progression shots for this piece.

this is the piece i started after i got home from work. can’t believe i got this far, i was really pushing myself. everything is acrylic [except the face ... that's all oil ... and i'm surprised i was able to work relatively well in la...yers considering they're so wet ... i usually have to wait a day before i can layer].

just a preview. the rest is almost done. i just finished detailing the right eye [you can see the difference between the two]. stupid me, i should have done the left one first … since i’m right handed].

i have a group show with two fellow latina artists whom i am a great admirer of their work, so this feels very much like a powerhouse to me, i’m quite excited. the show is called “GOOD LATINA” and features Lizbeth Ortiz [the 2008 Latin Grammy Poster Contest winner] and Stephanie Guajardo whose graphite renderings are the most amazing i’ve seen in a long time. the show is November 3rd at Bohemeo’s and i can hardly wait.
