complete : watersnakes II …

i managed to finish the piece last night and left it in the trunk of my car [without the trun covering, so there was direct sunlight through the hatchback]. after it was all dry, and some of the layers of oil had dulled, leaving the gorgeous glass like gloss underneath all dull in some spots, i decided to lay on a thick layer of varnish. this would effectively seal in the colors and lock them in place and also provide what i’d hoped to be a very shiny finish. i put it back in my trunk. a couple of hours later, to my amazement [and admittedly, horror], i found the glaze had produced a wrinkling effect. it did nothing to the color underneath, instead the glaze seemed to pucker and wrinkle in places, giving the entire painting a textured finish. completely unintentional. i’m not sure if i like it or not, but i don’t have the time to try and fix it if i even could [which i doubt].  at any rate, i have to mail this out tomorrow to arrive in l.a. this week for the show this coming weekend.

the wrinkling effect is best observed on the skin in the photo below:

the “skirt” has a gel, which i lined out with small grooves, then glazed with a pinkish metallic pigment. it reminds me of fish scales, and under the right lighting, changes colors with its iridescence.
