I hear you. You make a good point about tolerance. I believe in everyone’s right to believe whatever they want. But that doesn’t mean I have to dig it.

I can freely admit that I’m prejudiced against the religious right as well as scientologists no matter what they contribute to society. That doesn’t mean I cannot get along with them or enjoy something they’ve done (that rarely happens with the religious right though).

I still like Beck’s stuff…I just can’t listen to it without making a mental note about his belief system and how retarded/cultish that system is. I honestly do not consider Scientology as a real religion anyway.

My last partner on the ambulance was a devout baptist and about as religious as you can imagine. He never sweared, couldn’t fathom even drinking wine. we couldn’t have been more opposite if we tried. But we got a long great - I still listened to death metal and swore like it was going out of style. An atheist and a southern baptist mopping up the blood under the guidance of only medicine - Good times.

I used to like Beck. I can still sorta listen to his music if it comes on casually in the background but I cannot listen to it any more without thinking that this guy is a lifetime Scientologist. It bothers me that his record company tried to hide for so many years. People that are scientologists disturb more than people that are devout Christians. I can’t watch Tom Cruise movies anymore.

i never cared for cruise and his movies to begin with, and i think it is silly that in an age where “tolerance” is supposedly the message we try to embrace, we find it necessary to STILL be biased by a person’s religious choice.

in the grand scheme of things, that’s what it boils down to …. judging an artist by their religious choice rather than what they contribute to our society.

no you don’t have to dig it such is the beauty of choice. but i know i’ve heard many people take the stance of discounting someone’s work simply based on their faith.

i feel the same way about scientology … clearly a cult. but that can be said about many religions. if we could all agree that many belief systems seem “strange” to one another, then why can’t they be accepted. i don’t believe in trying to force one’s beliefs on others or trying to incorporate it into our government [as many of us here in america are experiencing]. i think there is a line that must be drawn, and Universal Law should be instated instead.

but i didn’t want this to be a dialogue about religion or politics. i just simply wanted to share my adoration for a brilliant musician that i have a major crush on.

but thanks for the dialogue i love your story about you and your partner.
