in progress : Icarus
i ordered this little man recently and was so happy when he arrived, i jumped right into a new piece [granted, i've got several in the works, but what's one more]. i started by taking out his organs [setting aside the heart so i could create a mold to cast duplicates from ... then promptly put aside the liver, spleen, intestines, etc, probably to never use. ever.]
i gave him a wash of burnt sienna, raw umber and gold. several, actually, till he looked like some old piece of plastic that’s been left to decay [or a very light sheath of dried pigskin, i can't decide which. either way, it works]. i had a small wooden plaque and used it to secure him to it, with screws and liquid nails. neatness doesn’t really count in this sort of thing, just security, as in, secure the pieces as best as you can. heck, the whole messy attitude just adds to the character later
i had these wooden appliques [which i also casted, these just happen to be the originals] that made a nice set of wings. i secured these with a couple of screws and more liquid nails. i may have to wait till my order comes in before i start the next phase. but for now, i have filled his torso with insulation foam and have just the thing [a large door hinge] to mount in front and place that excised heart in front of
nothing is secure in this last photo, i just took this to help me visualize what i am going for. the torso will be filled with bits and bobs that will help convey the story of Icarus and Daedelus. the problem with this, is it’s turning into something along the lines of my approach to painting. i HAD a vision in mind, but it’s taking on a life of its own at EVERY turn. so much so, that this was originally supposed to be a saint. [good thing i've got TWO see through fellas].
