hd-dvd loses to blu-ray …
… but hd-dvd users are the real losers.
ugh. i learned this the hard way. my recent purchase of 2001 space odyssey and a clockwork orange are incompatible with the x-box 360, ps2 and the mac. :\
although i’ve purchased dvd’s since we got the new tv, they were regular format and being so cheap, i overlooked the low compression digital choppiness. for xmas, i got the latest harry potter film in high definition. it looked fantastic. and at $25.00 for this format, it damn well BETTER.
so i purchased online the two kubrick films mentioned above, from two different sellers, brand new and still in the shrink wrap. [at about $15.00 each, i figured i was getting a good deal]. when i put them in the three players listed above, neither worked. i notice the insert within with a disclaimer that the disc may have been made after my player and may not be compatible, to check with my manufacturer. [are you kidding me? why is this on the INSIDE? not that it would matter, as it is rather obvious that i don't research these things ahead of time] but now i’m stuck with two discs that are basically junk. i looked online and found that they don’t even MAKE hd-dvd players anymore and that blu-ray will be taking over all formats as of mid 2008 [this reminds me of the time we held on for so long to our Betamax, even though VCR's took over the industry and they no longer even MADE beta cassettes].
i don’t think i’ll be buying any more dvd’s for a while. i wasn’t particularly happy that my now impressive collection is bunko since getting the HD television. the idea of having to replace all of it with blu-ray discs makes my bank account cringe. [i think the harry potter disc was a blu-ray, come to think of it]. at any rate, the debate over which is better is over … they both suck for having done this to me.
